Free-space optical communication (FSO) is an optical communication technology that uses light propagating in free space to wirelessly transmit data for telecommunications or computer networking. The technology is useful where the physical connections are impractical due to high costs or other considerations from, building to building or tower to building.

The purpose of a fixed wireless link is to enable data communications between the two sites or buildings. Fixed wireless data (FWD) links are often a cost-effective alternative .

The point-to-point signal transmissions occur through the air over a terrestrial microwave platform rather than through copper or optical fibre.
